4.2.1 Over-Density in the Individual Building Level

Whitechapel’s over-density is characterised by the ratio between the numbers of surveyed families per unoccupied residential units. Analysing the data for 2012, we can recognise the clustering of over-density (Fig. 4.2), in specific locations. Comparing density between population groups and private and community housing, the data indicate that European, and mainly East European (Fig. 4.3), are related to low density. Thus, the areas where the European groups residing is usually characterised by low density, even if they are mixed with other population groups, and vice versa: where over-density can be identified there are no European groups. This is also relevant to the attractive north-Western part of Whitechapel. Figure 4.4 shows the distribution of densities in buildings’ flats in 1995 and 2012 that looks lognormal. In 2012, the average density was about 2 families per flat and about 72% of the buildings had a density greater than one family per flat.
